Education

Here at Precious Jewelers, we want to make the process of purchasing a piece of fine jewelry as easy as possible for you as the consumer. But we understand it is easy to get overwhelmed. We feel it's important to know a bit about the quality of our pieces before making a purchase. We welcome you to take a moment to learn how to recognize distinct quality in precious stones and jewelry.

The 4 C's of Diamonds

CUT:  Arguably the most important and the most difficult to understand. 'Cut' is not the same as a diamond's 'shape'. Cut refers to the diamond's reflective qualities. The quality of the cut drastically determines how the diamond looks. A good cut gives the diamond it's brilliance. The angles of any diamond are what determine its ability to handle light, leading to it's brilliance.

COLOR: Color of a diamond refers to the presence or absence of color in white diamonds. Color is a result of the composition and it never changes over time. Because a colorless diamond allows more light to pass through it than a colored diamond, colorless diamonds show more sparkle. The whiter a diamond's color, the greater its value.

CLARITY: Clarity refers to the presence of identifying characteristics on and within the stone. There are two kinds of flaws: inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions refer to internal flaws and blemishes refer to surface flaws.

CARAT: A carat is a unit of measurement used to weigh a diamond. Deciding on carat size is about balance between size and quality.
